Dry Skin Brushing

There are a couple of schools of thought on how to use dry skin brushing. If you would like to specifically work on your lymphatic system you want to apply slow and soft pulsating strokes with a soft brush movings from limbs to center. If you want a more rigorous style of brushing that would be more specific to increasing circulation and moving stagnant chi, you want to use deeper circular strokes moving from the limbs to the center.

You can purchase one at the health food store, or online. the most important thing is to get a brush that is not to hard.

This technique has been used for hundreds of years to boost the lymph system and remove dead skin cells from the body without removing the protective oils. Before you bathe or shower, massage your body using a dry skin brush. The bath or shower to follow will rinse away the dead cells leaving softer smoother skin. Dry skin brushing speeds up the internal cleansing of the body and reduce the stress to kidneys, lungs, and colon, which also assists in the elimination of waste.

Dry Skin Brushing Routine

  • Begin brushing your skin in long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction. Always brush towards the heart. Try and brush several times in each area, over-lapping as you go.
  • Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken
  • After brushing your skin, rinse off in the shower. Alternate temperatures in the shower from hot to cold. This will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bring more blood to the outer layers of the skin.
  • After getting out of the shower, you can dry off with the towel moving from the limbs to the center again encouraging detoxification of the lymphatic system.
  • Don’t forget to clean your skin brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, dry your skin brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.
  • For a thorough lymphatic cleansing, perform soft feather light skin brushing technique daily for a minimum of three months.
